You could be a brilliant mind or an expert in your field, but unless you know how to showcase your abilities and know what the employers are looking for, you might never get that job you are applying for. That's what this book is all about. It answers the question - Why people get hired. The book opens with a short lesson in the history of economics, but don't worry - there's a reason for that. I think the author wanted to show us how we should see our - the employees' - value on the job market.
The author systematically walks the reader through the thought process of looking at ourselves and realizing what we have to offer; looking at the job market and realizing what it requires; and showing how to match the two.
The employer's point of view and considerations while choosing among the job applicants is one of the more interesting points of this book, in my opinion. An average person has no clue what goes into that sort of thought process and yet it's one of the main components that goes into hiring an applicant.
Yet the strongest point of this book is to help us realize our own value. This is not just "You are the Best so Go Get It" sort of thing. There are practical pointers and advise on how to make sure your potential employer would realize your value as well.
The book also covers all the basic points of job hunting in much detail - how to construct your resume so it will get on the top of the list of the applications, how to look and apply for the job effectively, how to prepare for an interview, what to do on the day of the interview, how to negotiate the details of your employment, etc.
All in all, this is a detailed, practical, clever, and useful guide on how to get a job you want. If you are looking for a job, this book can be a good investment for you.

Job Search Formula Nik Lemmens Dr Nicole O'Driscoll 9781478265757 Books Reviews
Having been in the recruiting and hiring business for almost six years now, I find the authors approach to be right on target. We receive calls daily from individuals seeking advice on how to find their next opportunity and as the author points out, it is a planned process that involves some very basic but demanding requirements that simply will not fail if truly implemented. In these ever changing times this book provides advice for individuals who are seeking a job now but who also should be practicing many of these techniques all the time so that they can be in control of their careers and not controlled by them! Absolutely a must have for every job hunter.
As someone that chose last year to leave the corporate world to start my own business, I came to enjoy 3 months of free career coaching. Boy, I wish I would have had Nicole O'Driscoll and Nik Lemmens' book back then. Their book goes after the underlying exchange between companies and invididual employees, and by understanding what value each of them brings to the table (and the other one is looking for), the reader gets a powerful guiding compass how to shape their job search and ensuing interactions with their future employers.
But as a true coach, Nik guides the reader through defining what the ideal job is - providing much needed focus, and avoiding all efforts hunting for unsatisfactory jobs. A must read if you're planning to switch careers, or if you're about to hire employees (like I am right now!)....
This book takes the job hunter from the start of the job search to negotiating terms after being hired.
The first three chapters entitled "1.0 Value, 2.0 You and 3.0 Job Openings" takes the reader through the difficult part of realistically analyzing jobs which one is qualified and also suited for. This was my favorite part. While going through this process I uncovered some unthought of possibilities.
The next three chapters entitled " 4.0 Positioning Yourself with a Great CV, 5.0 Job Search Formula and 6.0 The Application and Shortlisting Process" dealt with the process of finding job openings and writing a great résumé to fit those advertised jobs. In these chapters the author shows how this is the most critical part of the job hunt and how to best approach it.
The final three chapters entitled "7.0 Interview Preparation, 8.0 The Day of the Interview and 9.0 Negotiations" take the reader through all aspects of conveying the best image you can to the interviewing company. There was great ideas in these last chapters that I had not previously considered. The section on how to negotiate benefits after you have been hired is alone worth the price of this book.
I enjoyed the conversational style of the author and entertaining examples.
Most of all... Good luck in your job hunt!
This book found me at just the right time... especially because when I found it the author was having a free promotion.
As a stay at home dad for the last 8 years, and a wife being made redundant at the end of the month, my confidence in my ability to find full time work is at an all time low. This book was the virtual slap on the face I needed (thanks... I needed that).
I have been guilty of some of the practices outlined in the book, namely job searching in broad strokes -- sending out lots of the same (slightly modified) CV, with the same basic cover letter, to heaps of potential employers, and hoping something sticks. This is proving to be a waste of time, and by reading through this book I have learnt that I need to fine tune my job search in order to be successful. Work smarter not harder in other words.
Like marketing experts will teach you to target a market with laser precision, this book will teach you how to analyze yourself and your skills, in order to only go for jobs that match your skill set so you stand the best possible chance of success. You will learn how to customize your CV so it doesn't get binned at first glance, and how to correctly conduct yourself at interviews, whether by phone, or as a sit down. And all without any of the fluff so prevalent in other job search help books.
This book is recommended for the person who is looking for work or thinking about leaving their current position. It has certainly given me some insight into how I can improve my technique.
